The Pawn
![]() The pawn has a couple of tricks up its sleeve even though it is a small piece. One of them is that it can move forward two spaces on its first move, instead of only one. Its next trick is tied into the first one, basicly if an opponent pawn comes next to one of your pawns it can kill that pawn and move one space forward. Another trick that the pawn can do is called "En Passant". For example, a light pawn has just moved forward two squares. A dark pawn, that is next to the light one may now move to the square directly behind the light one as if the pawn had only moved one place. The white pawn is then captured. |
The Rook
![]() The Rook has a trick that involves the king. In this trick, which is called "castling" a rook will move over two spaces and the king will move to the inside of the rook. This move can help get kings out of check even before they are in. I say this because once the King is in check the king can not "castle". |
The Knight
![]() The Knight has a trick called the "fork" which is when the Knight pins down two pieces and the opponant has to sacrifice one to save the other. The best case scenario is when one of the pieces is the opponants king. |
The Bishop
![]() The Bishop also has the "fork" trick but it my not be as effective becasue the Bishop would be lined up with the pieces so there is a better chance that your Bishop could be caught. |
The Queen
![]() The Queen does not really have any tricks seeing how the Queen can move in all directions as far as it can. |
The King
![]() The King has only one trick and i described it in the rook section. |
